At Highgate Ostrich Farm you experience the world’s largest flightless bird, the ostrich. Touring a working farm, you will learn more about this fascinating bird. In the main yard you will learn about the life span of this unusual bird. The ostrich may be flightless, but they can reach speeds on land of up to 80km per hour and sustain this for between 10 and 20 minutes. You will visit the incubators and view the largest bird eggs. Your guide will teach you about the feeding habits of the ostrich and some of the more unusual items that these curious birds have been known to eat. The town of Oudtshoorn was built on ostrich farming and in its heyday the feathers were highly sought after as a fashion item. Your guide will explain the use of the various feathers. A visit to the farmland enables you to see the breeding pairs and learn a little more about the anatomy of this unusual bird.
