Barossa Valley Local Experiences

Chateau Tanunda Estate

Château Tanunda, built in 1890 from bluestone quarried at nearby Bethany, is steeped in history. It's an awe-inspiring place to visit, combining historic winery buildings and a stunning cellar door offering internationally acclaimed wines. The building is surrounded by vineyards and beautifully landscaped gardens, a great place to stop and relax while in the valley.

The cellar door offers the chance to try the full Château Tanunda wine range while surrounded by a thousand oak barrels of maturing wine. You can also enjoy a platter while you sit outside or by the open fire. Stroll outside the cellar door to the stunning croquet green and have a go at this wonderful old game. Comfortable outdoor seating is available for those of you who prefer to relax away your day.

Anlaby Station

Anlaby is one of Australia's great homesteads and one of the first grand rural properties of South Australia. Settled in 1839 by Frederick Dutton, it reached its heyday in the Edwardian era when it also hosted the Prince of Wales.

The property is in the process of being restored to breathe life into the original buildings and gardens that once echoed to the sounds of a prosperous and thriving rural station and community. The Manor House was one of the first residences on the property to be refurbished. It is now available as short stay accommodation.

Explore the Folly and the 10 acre gardens including the 600 roses in the formal rose garden. Visit the stable quadrangle with its old clock tower, stables, blacksmith's shop, harness and saddle rooms and grooms quarters.

The Barossa Valley Sculpture Park

One of the Barossa’s more unique attractions that blends together both the man-made and the natural into an interesting combination, this makes for an ideal starting point for first-time visitors to the region looking to gain the lay of the land. For one of the best available overviews of the Barossa Valley’s scenery, head for the Barossa Valley Sculpture Park at Mengler’s Hill which offers a sweeping, 180 degree panorama of the various wineries and fields that make up the region’s verdant landscape.

Making for a wonderful spot for a photograph, or an idyllic break between trips to wineries, the site is host to a number of distinctive pieces of abstract art that have been sculpted by a number of renowned artists at a duo of symposiums – the first of which was held back in 1988, and the following on the 20th anniversary in 2008.

Barossa Bike Hire

Those looking to combine taking in the Barossa’s scenery with a dose of added exercise all conducted at your own pace can take the opportunity to don a helmet and hop on two wheels for a custom adventure. The close proximity of a number of the region’s best wineries to one another – coupled with the inherently scenic landscape – makes the Barossa one of Australia’s most enjoyable leisurely rides, and the region boasts an extensive array of well-constructed, sealed track ideal for both walking and riding.
