Day 1 : Arrive Christchurch
Arrive in Christchurch and explore this pretty city at leisure. Christchurch is one of the world’s most unique destinations, combining urban regeneration and innovation with heritage, culture and exhilarating activity. Perhaps you’ll visit one of the city’s new restaurants, see vibrant street art or check out the amazing retail areas.
Day 2 : Christchurch – Twizel (281km)
Pick up your motorhome and travel across the Canterbury Plains towards the sparkling glacial waters of Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and inspiring Mount Cook. Admire in the stunning views of the Southern Alps before arriving at your campground for the night.
Day 3 : Twizel – Carrick Wines (Central Otago) (146km)
Head south via inspiring Mount Cook and Lake Pukaki before driving further through the valleys of the Southern Alps. Arrive at the Carrick Wines Estate for your first Winery Haven experience and a delicious hamper awaits and, if available, take a tour of the winery and perhaps purchase some of the local produce.
Day 4 : Carrick Wines – Queenstown (60km)
Continue to the adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown. The rest of the day is free to explore. Why not take a ride on the Skyline Gondola high atop the Queenstown basin. Perhaps you’ll take an optional boat ride on the famous TSS Earnslaw across Lake Wakatipu or head off to nearby Arrowtown, once a gold mining settlement. The adventurous might try the adrenalin rush of the Shotover Jet boat ride or even a bungee jump. This is an upcoming wine area, so maybe a winery tour is more to your liking.
Day 5 : Queenstown
Queenstown is also a gateway to the stunning Fiordland National Park, with tours to either Doubtful or Milford Sounds available. With incredible mountain backdrops and cascading waterfalls, New Zealand’s Fiordlands are one of the most spectacular cruises in the world. Ask for details of either day tours or overnight options.
Day 6 : Queenstown – Franz Josef Glacier (350km)
Head north along the Haast Pass to New Zealand’s glacier country. The Fox and Franz Josef glaciers are two of the country’s largest and most easily accessible. Perhaps take a heli-flightseeing tour for outstanding views of these natural wonders that flow down to nearly sea level.
Day 7 : Franz Josef Glacier – Westport (273km)
Continue along the dramatic west coast, with it’s rugged and wind swept beaches. Stop at Punakaiki to view the famous pancake rocks and blowholes before heading to the seaside town of Westport, sitting on the mouth of the Buller River.
Day 8 : Westport – Blenheim (260km)
Head across the top of the Southern Alps to Marlborough wine country and Blenheim, an ideal base to explore the local wine and food culture. One of the sunniest towns in New Zealand, this charming village is full of characterful buildings, art galleries and boutique shops.
Day 9 : Blenheim
Spend time visiting the array of top class wineries, producing some of the finest wines in the world, with an included Marlborough Icons tour. Sample the local produce and learn about how they are created.
Day 10 : Blenheim – Wellington
An early start for the drive to Picton and board the Interislander ferry for a beautiful cruise through the Marlborough Sound before crossing the Cook Strait to Wellington, North Island.
Day 11 : Wellington
Today is free to enjoy New Zealand’s capital. Perhaps you’ll relax at Oriental Bay, Wellington’s golden-sand inner-city beach and delve into the many museums, art galleries and theatre shows that make up the city’s pulsing cultural scene. If you’re into the outdoors, Wellington has action-packed adventure activities like mountain biking and sea-water kayaking, as well as beautiful walks around the harbour and surrounding hills. Try the visually stunning Makara Peak track, as well as the City to Sea walk where you can experience the best of Wellington’s waterfront. Ride the cable car up the hill to Kelburn for amazing views over the city and enjoy an ice cream at the top. Or you may wish to visit Te Papa (the museum of New Zealand) or perhaps visit the Parliament Buildings.
Day 12 : Wellington – Linden Estate (Hawkes Bay) (335km)
Hawkes Bay is one of New Zealand’s best known wine regions and home to the Linden Wine Estate. Drive to Napier and enjoy it’s art-deco architecture before arriving at the winery for your overnight stay surrounded by the vineyard. Sample the local produce with your included, delicious hamper.
Day 13 : Linden Estate (Hawkes Bay) – Rotorua (210km)
The geothermal wonderland of Rotorua awaits. From crystal-clear streams and magical forests, to epic biking trails and explosive geysers, Rotorua has it all. Discover 18 sparkling lakes, magnificent native and exotic forests, geysers, boiling mud pools, hot springs and the best of New Zealand’s fascinating Maori culture. Perhaps take a guided tour of Te Puia and the Maori Arts & Crafts Institute to see roaring geysers and boiling mud pools, Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park, the Agrodome Leisure Park famous for its entertaining sheep show, a gondola cable car to the Skyline complex and Polynesian Spa, New Zealand’s leading international day spa and hot mineral baths (attractions listed here not included).
Day 14 : Rotorua – Mercury Bay Estate (Coromandel) (220km)
Drive to the scenic Coromandel Peninsula, with its superb beaches and coastline. Explore Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, with hot water and steam rising from the sand. Arrive at the Mercury Bay Estate winery and relax with your hamper with produce of the winery.
Day 15 : Mercury Bay Estate (Coromandel) – Auckland (165km)
Head to Auckland to drop off your motorhome. Perhaps stay longer in the City of Sails and explore the harbour or take the ferry and explore Waiheke Island. Alternatively, extend your rental and continue up to the beautiful Bay of Islands.
