Where to go in Kyushu

Fukuoka

Fukuoka city is a gate city of Kyushu and many flights and shinkansen arrive here. The city becomes livelier in the evening with numerous food stalls on the streets of the city. Northwest of Fukuoka city nestles Itoshima by the coast which has an impressive white torii gate in the sea.

Saga

Saga is located in the northwest of Kyushu, between Fukuoka and Nagasaki. Visit Karatsu Castle by the seaside. Panoramic views from the observation desk offer spectacular views of the Bay and Nijinomatsubara (pine tree forest). Saga is home to some famous potteries, Arita, Karatsu and Imari. Karatsu Castle displays various Karatsu potteries and provides the history of its pottery.

Miyazaki

Miyazaki is good for enjoying marine activities. Aoshima Island is about 1 hour away by train from Miyazaki city where tropical plants grow. The island is surrounded by Demon’s Washboard which was formed due to seafloor elevation and caving from sea water. Takachiho Gorge offers a mythical atmosphere and enjoyable boat rides on emerald-green water.

Kagoshima

Kagoshima is famous for active volcanos. Situated at the bottom of Kyushu Island, Kagoshima is blessed with a warn climate and hot springs. Sakurajima is a volcanic island - now a peninsula - in the middle of Kagoshima Bay and is constantly smoking. Try sand baths with the sound of the waves in the famous hot spring town called Ibusuki.

Nagasaki

Nagasaki city is formed with many slopes and the influence of the West remains deep. Glover Garden preserves three houses and one of them is that of the Scottish merchant, Thomas Glover who contributed to Japan’s modernisation. The night view of Nagasaki port from the Garden is picturesque. Immerse yourself in the tranquillity of the Nagasaki Peace Park that commemorates the victims of the atomic bomb.

Oita

Beppu onsen and Yufuin onsen were loved by people as a sanatorium. Beppu Jigoku(hell) Tour features 7 hot springs where each of them has a different colour and character. Cobalt bule Jigoku looks stunning but still the water is nearly 100 degrees. Oniishi Bozu Jigoku is filled with grey hot mud and creates a beautiful pattern on the surface.

Kumamoto

Kumamoto Castle welcomes many visitors despite being damaged in the 2016 earthquake. The night lights light up on the castle and can be seen from an observation deck at the Kumamoto Municipal office. Purchase a Nyutou Tegata (Wooden pass for bathing) and visit some hot springs at the Kurokawa Onsen. This pass enables you to visit up to 3 ryokans for bathing in this area. The pass will be a fabulous souvenir.
