Hokkaido

Nestled in Japan’s north, Hokkaido is pristine wilderness, top-tier powder snow, exquisite seafood, and rich indigenous culture. The island offers an all-year escape into nature and a distinctive cultural experience, captivating those seeking natural tranquillity and the iconic Blue Pond.

Where to go in Hokkaido

Sapporo

Capital of Japan’s northernmost island, Sapporo is a great winter destination but also offers a wealth of culture, art and natural beauty. One of the most famous exports is the Sapporo beer, and the Hokkaido climate also makes it ideal for wine making unlike the rest of the country. The summer is best for beer and food festivals, and in February the population doubles during their famous Snow Festival.

Otaru

A small harbour city just half an hour from Sapporo by train, Otaru has beautifully preserved canal areas and interesting herring mansions making it an ideal day trip out of the city. Otaru’s history spans from the colonization in the late 1800s and was also chosen as the terminal station of Hokkaido’s first railway line. The old warehouses and former shipping office buildings give the city centre a character of days gone by.

Snow resorts

Hokkaido is the snow capital of Japan, famous for the heavy snowfall and perfect powder with up to 18 metres of snow per year. The northern position of Hokkaido means it is well placed in the path of the Siberian winds, which bring endless amounts of snow each ski season. The biggest ski resort is Niseko, which caters to all abilities and tastes offering a seamless blend of traditional Japanese culture and contemporary luxury.

Hakodate

The harbour city of Hakodate is the gateway between Honshu and Hokkaido and has a history of trade and shipping. The city is the perfect place for an afternoon seaside stroll, as well as for its stunning night views from Mount Hakodate and fresh seafood especially crab and squid at the Morning Market. Take a dip at Yunokawa Onsen with the snow monkeys, or visit the star shaped fortress Fort Goryokaku from the mid-1800s built to defend against the threat of imperialist powers.

Shikotsu-Toya National Park

Enjoy wintry snowshoe walks, hikes to spectacular peaks or relaxing strolls through Hokkaido’s flora and fauna. Easily accessed from Sapporo, this National Park offers a range of outdoor activities. For those less adventurous, choose to visit the onsen towns of Noboribetsu and Jozankei to soak in the mineral waters.
