The World's Most Liveable Cities Part 1

The votes are in and 7 of the world’s 10 most liveable cities just happen to be in three of our top destinations, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

We’ve compiled a list of the cities that came out on top in 2016, along with some of the reasons you should give these amazing places a visit.

7. Auckland, New Zealand

Unique day-trips
Just a 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, you can visit Waiheke Island, which is home to nearly 100 pristine white-sand beaches, 30 wineries and miles of olive groves. There is a distinctly bohemian feel to the island, reminiscent of the 1960’s era in which the island was dominated by the art of local residents that pushed the boundaries of convention.

Plus, just a short drive from Auckland a piece of cinematic history is on display- Hobbiton, the film set used in the Lord of the Rings movies. This day out, with 44 ‘Hobbit holes’, epitomises the magic and fantasy that the film aims to portray. Finish the day off with a home brewed at the Green Dragon pub, where Bilbo Baggins himself used to unwind.

Beaches
Auckland is unique in that it straddles two coasts; the east coast offers white-sand beaches and the calm waters of the Pacific Ocean, whereas the west coast offers the black-sand wilderness of the Tasman Sea. Both are equally picturesque; but the ruggedness, daunting cliffs and pounding waves make for dramatic and memorable scenery.

The city
If you aren’t a lover of beaches, Auckland still has something for you! Alongside hundreds of shops , there are plenty of things to see and do in Auckland’s city centre. Perhaps take a trip to Queen Street, which is home to the Civic Theatre, the Town Hall, Aotea Centre and Square, or seek out
tucked-away boutique shops, quaint book stores and quirky clothing shops. With so many places to visit, there’s always something happening in Auckland!

The friendly people
“Kiwis” as the locals are called, are welcoming to visitors and praised for their friendly nature. The European influence is still strong, due to New Zealand being an ex-British colony.

Friendly people, a balanced city/coastal lifestyle and unique experiences are just some of the reasons that are likely to make Auckland one of the world’s most liveable cities, make sure you get the chance to see for yourself!

6. Perth, Australia

Animal lovers
Australia’s unique wildlife is world famous, so visitors are sure to enjoy Perth Zoo, which offers an insight into the lives of Australia’s best-loved animals and 160 other species from around the world. Kangaroos, dingoes and koalas - Perth has plenty to offer for animal lovers! Learn about wildlife and plants, and have the opportunity to get up close with the animals.

Quirky food and drinks scene
With the emergence of intimate bars, retro-vintage dining and live music, Perth has become a melting pot of culture and cuisine. Head to Northbridge, an area with a strong Asian and European community, to try everything from delicious traditional Thai dishes to classic Italian pizzas and pastas.

Great hang-out spots
There’s no better way to spend a warm summer’s evening than with friends at Kings Park. Find a good spot on the grassy lawns for an open air cinema showing at Moonlight Cinema, which shows new releases and cult classics throughout the summer. However, Kings Park can be enjoyed year-round; enjoy fantastic views of the city and the river, stunning botanical gardens and a World War I memorial.

One of three Australian cities in the Top 10 and the capital of Western Australia, Perth is an economic powerhouse and a scenic paradise.

5. Adelaide, Australia

Wine capital of Australia
Sit around a cosy fire on a vineyard with a glass of Australian Shiraz or take a tour of the several wineries that are scattered around Adelaide, all within an hour’s drive of each other. Some of Australia’s most recognized brands such as Jacob’s Creek originate from Adelaide. There is no other capital city in Australia that offers you such easy access to so many different wine regions!

Festivals and events
Fancy the party and fun vibes of a festival without the maddening crowds? Adelaide is the place to be! Adelaide’s wide variety of festivals and events mean there is sure to be something on offer for everyone. Experience the thrill of a live Australian Football League game, take a trip to Fringe Festival or Tasting Australia. Or, have a day out at one of Adelaide’s smaller, but just as fun, events such as Splash Adelaide, which aims to bring the city streets to live with parties, performances and pop-up food vendors.

Adelaide is a 19th century city scattered with boulevards and squares, all surrounded by lush green leafy parks. It scored top marks for healthcare and education in the most liveable cities rankings, and it’s easy to see why.

Keep an eye out for next week's blog post, in which we'll be counting down the cities that reached the top 4 most liveable cities!
