Wildlife of Atlantic Canada

Destination Canada & AC logo

Atlantic Canada has one of the smallest ecozones in all of Canada, yet still manages to boast an incredible variety of freshwater and marine environments. This not only makes for an excellent range of seafood, but lots of wildlife too! Whether you’re an avid bird-watcher, a keen fisher or just want to get out for a bit of bear spotting, you’re never far from nature in this Atlantic wildlife tour.

Brilliant bird-watching

Atlantic Canada as a whole is every bird-watchers paradise; so much so that it is often referred to as “an international crossroads for seabirds”. Lakes and shaded waterways within forests supply habitat for herons, loons, and freshwater ducks, while osprey and eagles nest in tall trees. Canada Goose, Blue-winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck, and 31 other bird species breed exclusively in the unique freshwater habitats of the Atlantic region.

Fantastic forests

Head into the forests of Atlantic Canada and you’ll find black bears, bobcats, snowshoe hares, and white-tailed Deer. Large moose herds concentrate in various regions, especially in the heart of the Chics-Chocs mountains of the Gaspé Peninsula. If you’re lucky you may even see wolves, wink, and the occasional Lynx!

Fabulous fishing

The area’s low-lying beaches and tidal flats are dominated by burrowing crustaceans; think scallop, mackerel, groundfish and herring fisheries. Some of the best seafood in Canada is sourced here! Atlantic Canada is famous for its fresh and abundant seafood, from succulent lobster, to mussels, oysters and cod. Dine at a seaside restaurant to taste the day’s freshest catch.

Magnificent marine life

Whale watching in Atlantic Canada is a popular pastime for both locals and visitors alike. Newfoundland and Labrador hosts over 20 species of whale, including the world's largest population of humpbacks! Nova Scotia is a fantastic destination for whale watching from sea and on land, boasting over 120 accessible beaches. The Bay of Fundy - known for the world's highest tides -  attracts an incredible population of whales. Between the months of June and September, humpbacks can be seen breaching the surface and playing along the shores. You’ll also find seals, dolphins, porpoises and Black Guillemots.
