Rocky Mountaineer: Ask the Experts

Embark on a journey like no other with Rocky Mountaineer, one of the world’s most spectacular rail experiences. From breathtaking mountain landscapes to shimmering turquoise lakes and incredible wildlife sightings, this iconic train journey offers a front-row seat to nature’s finest show. But when is the best time to travel? What can you expect along the way? And how does Rocky Mountaineer compare to other rail experiences?

We’ve gathered expert insights to answer your top questions, from the best seasons for scenery and wildlife to tips on making the most of your trip. Whether you're planning your first journey or looking to explore a new route, this guide will help you discover why Rocky Mountaineer is an unforgettable adventure.

What is the best time of year to take the Rocky Mountaineer?

Rocky Mountaineer operates between April and October and there really is no bad time to travel onboard! However, I particularly like travelling in May/June when the lakes have started to thaw and become a beautiful turquoise colour. Alternatively, I love to travel in the Autumn months for the colour changes in the trees. The combination of turquoise lakes and yellow/orange trees is truly spectacular!

How do the seasons impact the scenery and wildlife viewing?

Sadly I cannot guarantee animal sightings but Western Canada has an abundance of wildlife that do tend to come right up to the train tracks. Your clients might see grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, moose, eagles, hawks, ospreys, coyotes, big-horned sheep – the list goes on! Animals are typically more active in the Spring months when they have just woken up from their hibernation.

What should passengers bring to enhance their experience?

I would recommend bringing binoculars so you get the best wildlife sightings! It is also goes without saying that you should bring a camera so you can record some of those amazing moments onboard which you can then relive your memories when you return home.

What are the different routes available on the Rocky Mountaineer, and how do they compare?

There are 3 routes to choose from in Western Canada and one route in the South-west states of the USA. First Passage to the West is a 2-day journey linking Vancouver-Banff and this is our most popular route. This is a historic journey which also travels through the iconic Spiral Tunnels. Journey through the Clouds is another 2-day journey connecting Vancouver – Jasper and will travel past Mount Robson which is the highest peak in the Rockies. Rainforest to Gold Rush is a longer itinerary with 2 overnight stops and also connects Vancouver – Jasper- great for clients that want a little more time onboard! Finally we have Rockies to the Red Rocks in the USA which travels between Denver in Colorado and Moab in Utah.

What makes the Rocky Mountaineer different from other train journeys?

Rocky Mountaineer is very unique! We are an all-daylight service which means clients never sleep onboard. That way everyone gets a good nights sleep and we don’t miss any of the incredible scenery in Canada or in the USA. Also, our Gold Leaf carriages have glass-domed coaches which offers a spectacular immersive way of viewing the landscapes.

Ready to experience the magic for yourself? Rocky Mountaineer is waiting to take you on a journey of a lifetime.
