First Class Experiences: New York City with Lorna

Lorna, our Head of Product, has recently returned from a trip to New York hosted by New York Tourism and JetBlue. Visiting the iconic New York landmarks and beyond. Below is a summary of her trip.

1. When did you go? How long did you stay and what places did you visit?

I spent 5 fabulous days in New York as part of a work trip hosted by New York Tourism and JetBlue. Alongside the supplier meetings and events, I also had time to explore the city and enjoy some of the incredible attractions. I’d never flown with JetBlue before, so it was great to experience their product. On the outward flight I was lucky enough to travel in their Mint cabin, which is their business class product. Lie flat seats, each with direct aisle access, free wi-fi and a build-your-own-menu made it an exceptional experience. On the return I enjoyed the Even More Space seats in the Core (economy) cabin, plenty of leg room and again free wi-fi, a build-your-own-menu and inflight pantry along with excellent service. In addition to the work side of things I also got to visit SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, The Edge, Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller Centre, One World Observatory and the Empire State Building as well as a show on Broadway, a performance at the New York Opera, time at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and a visit to the Louis Armstrong Museum in Queens. I stayed on the Upper West Side, just a 5-minute walk from Central Park and one block from the subway, which meant Times Square was under 10 minutes away.

2. Is there an iconic moment/experience during your trip you would like to share?

Visiting all five of the New York observation decks was a revelation as they are all so very different. The Edge at sunset was truly spectacular though, and standing at the top of the Empire State Building was a real pinch me moment. Seeing Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ at MoMA was also incredible and I could have spent hours there.

3. What were the things you like the most from New York?

The atmosphere is incredible but there are also little pockets of calm. There is always something to look at and so much to do.

4. What tips would you give to someone who is visiting New York for the first time?

Spend a little time planning what you want to do, pre-booking things such as observation decks is essential (and you can amend if the weather is bad), walk, walk and walk some more, wear comfortable shoes and embrace the subway!

5. Why would you recommend New York?

It is everything you expect it to be and more. It is larger than life and utterly fabulous.

6. What kind of traveller would enjoy New York, families, couples, group of friends, honeymooners… all of them?

With the right planning there is something for all – and that’s where First Class Holidays can help.

7. Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

Flying with JetBlue was a revelation, they have their own terminal at JFK and on your way home you should allow time to visit the original TWA hotel, which is part of the same terminal. It’s a wonderful slice of nostalgic glamour where you can enjoy a drink before heading back to the UK.
