We know we say we’re travel experts, but it’s because we really are!
Many of our staff are lucky enough to have visited the amazing destinations that we offer. In our latest blog series for New Zealand Month, we chatted to our travel specialists about their trips to New Zealand.
One of our travel specialists, Debbie McNally, discusses her experiences.
Where and when did you go to New Zealand?
In 2011 I cruised from Sydney and around both the north and south islands.
What was your best experience whilst there?
Where to start…I took shore excursions/ local sightseeing trips to explore the islands further. In Dunedin, Wellington, Napier & Auckland we just toured the city on foot. In Tauranga we did a trip to Hobbiton and Rotorua which was amazing, it was like something straight out of a movie – literally!!
In Akaroa we did a trip to the Canterbury region; both the Tauranga and Akaroa excursions were small coach tours with a limited number of guests and a private guide giving a running commentary. There was a lot of miles to cover for these but it meant I got to see the vast, mystical, dramatic and everchanging NZ landscape, and the guide’s expert knowledge gave us an insight into places we were travelling around.
In the Bay of Islands we walked to the historical sights of Waitangi and then found a local dolphin watching boat trip that we jumped on; seeing the dolphins was amazing, but we were treated to a surprise visit from a humpback whale and her calf which was definitely a memory of a lifetime!
Any tips to share for those going or wanting to go?
A cruise is a great way to see the islands if you are short on time and want to fit as much in as possible, without the constant need to pack and unpack. The cruise ships offer all their own excursions but as experienced cruisers, we often save some pennies doing it independently where we can. Although for more nervous and first-time cruisers, I would recommend the ships own tours. Always make sure the company offers a back to ship guarantee!
