We know we say we’re travel experts, but it’s because we really are!
Many of our staff are lucky enough to have visited the amazing destinations that we offer. In our latest blog series for New Zealand Month, we chatted to our travel specialists about their experiences in New Zealand.
First up, our Managing Director, Dan Gathercole.
Where and when did you go to New Zealand?
I travelled around New Zealand for 3 months, and visited both the north and south islands. I love it that much that I ended up living in Auckland for a year!
How did you travel?
I travelled around in a camper van… or a motorhome as it is called these days! It was such a great way to explore New Zealand, I couldn’t recommend it enough. Hitting the wide-open road, being able to stop whenever I pleased and my bed being 5 seconds from the steering wheel… what’s not to love?
What was your best experience whilst there?
I loved every minute of it, but the best place I visited was Abel Tasman National Park. Sea kayaking from beach to beach and seeing an abundance of wildlife was phenomenal. Sleeping in the beach huts was an amazing experience too – it’s a must-do if you’re lucky enough to be visiting.
Any tips to share for those going or wanting to go?
Allocate more time than you think you need... I think you need a minimum of 3 weeks to do it properly, but I would suggest longer if you have the time or budget. Make sure to try and see as many places as you can, especially Milford Sound, but don’t forget to give yourself time to relax and soak up the New Zealand culture.
Where would you like to experience next in New Zealand that you never did when you went?
I don’t think I spent enough time in some of the cities – Wellington and Christchurch for example. I would like to go back there and see a bit more than I did previously. I’d also love to spend more time in the Bay of Islands!
